Rebecca Happy of Ottawa BuzzTV spoke with owner operator of The Caribbean Cruiser, Julian Goodluck about how he got to running a mobile food truck in the nation’s capital. Julian came from a much warmer country in the part of the world many of us would much rather be at some point during our cold hard winters.
The Caribbean Cruiser is among the 18 food trucks that got licensed to operate on the streets of Ottawa around 4 years ago. Julian came as a young chef to Ottawa to follow a love interest and go to the Algonquin College culinary arts program almost 20 years ago when he was just 20 and has not looked back.
The name of the truck cruiser came from the idea of cruise ships stopping at the various Caribbean islands discovering all the delicious foods unique to each place. Testing out new tastes in his kitchen lab Julian has been able to develop traditional foods with his own secret spin for those in Ottawa.
When asked about his favourite item on the menu, he suggests that it is up to us but in between the lines, you may think that the Jack Sparrow dish of maui maui is his personal favourite. As he goes over all the menu items however each one seems to be the best choice.
Once you have been there, most come back on a regular basis. Open from mid April until the beginning of November, you can find the truck at the corners of Merivale Rd. And Withrow Ave. Right beside the Jiffy Lube. Be sure to plan a trip or more while you still have the time. Tell him Ottawa BuzzTV sent you.

Jennifer Clark speaks with Pierrette Raymond of Moving Forward Matters about life transitions and loss and how she helps people navigate some of life’s changes. In spite of some of the losses we live through, it is ok to move on and have a life after the fact. Laughing is permitted. Learning how to grieve and release the emotions connected with loss is often something that we do not like to speak about so we are left alone. Having a safe place to share and honour what it is we are going through helps. Pierrette has started an online Facebook group specifically for women who are in the middle of looking after others and themselves where she shares her knowledge and support along with a thousand other women called Women Living Fully. This group is one of those safe havens for people to help break the isolation as they work through some of the many life transitions we all face throughout our lifetimes.

The Story Behind the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women of Canada
Jenny Sutherland is a professional psychotherapist and social worker with Connor Homes, an Ontario Treatment Network supporting indigenous kids in care. To better understand this issues Jenny founds in the communities she served, she delved into the dark hidden history of Canada’s residential schools as part of her master’s program. She figured that there had to be some clues there as to the devastation to the family and attachment issues being presented among the First Nations families she was helping.
Jenny was surprised and profoundly saddened by what she uncovered. Until things get better on a larger scale, Jenny has developed training programs for those working in the field as well as for the foster parents supporting the kids who are living the continuation of the devastation that was the residential school system. She surmised that equipping the adults around the kids with tools and history to help rebuild personal and cultural pride would be a first step in the long journey of healing.
Out of the 30,000 plus kids in Canada’s care system almost 50% of them are indigenous and receive a large % less in financial resources to serve and support a healthier and happy childhood. As a white Canadian, when I heard this I was astounded. In fact I still am.
I heard Jenny speak at a fundraiser for the missing and murdered indigenous women during the summer solstice. I really had no idea about the issues surrounding the residential schools, the families and the indigenous people of Canada. I hear commentary and opinion all around me but never “the story”. When Jenny speaks, she refers to it as Canada’s “best kept secret”. Through her talks, she is bringing it into the light. Through her trainings, she is educating a population and helping to heal this generation of kids who were born of survivors and survivors of survivors.
